The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a federal program managed by FEMA that provides flood insurance to property owners, renters, and businesses and encourages communities to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations.
Participation in the NFIP, while strongly encouraged, is voluntary. When communities join the NFIP, property owners and renters have the opportunity to purchase federal flood insurance to protect themselves from financial losses.
To participate in the NFIP, a community must apply, adopt a resolution of intent to cooperate with FEMA, and implement floodplain management regulations that meet or exceed the NFIP's minimum requirements. These regulations guide land use and construction in floodplains to reduce flood damage and protect residents.
